Antique Oak GEORGE A. CLARK Spool Thread Display Cabinet~~6 Drawers~~Victorian Era~~Late 19th Century

~~OUTSTANDING antique spool cabinet with embossed tin sides and back panel, six drawers with incised decoration and stenciled lettering~~this has that "general store" look~~originally used in a mercantile for various sizes and colors of cotton sewing thread~~

A little history about these spool cabinets:  The Clark family built the first factory for making cotton thread for sewing in 1812 in Paisley, Scotland. George A. Clark (1824-1873), a descendant of the founders, immigrated to the United States in 1856 and acted as an agent for the company.  In 1864, George and his brother, William, built a thread mill in Newark, NJ.  It became Clark Thread Co.  The trademark "O.N.T" stands for "Our New Thread", a six-cord thread developed by George for use with sewing machines. The company eventually merged with J. & P. Coats in 1952 and is in business today as Coats & Clark, Inc., headquartered in Charlotte, NC.  Spool cabinets were display cases used in general stores and dry good stores in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
